Potchefstroom is one of South Africa's leading education towns, 30,000 tertiary students, 45 primary and secondary schools, around 6,400 learners. Parents show up. Schools compete fiercely. And yet, against a national backdrop where the PIRLS study found 81% of Grade 4 learners can't read for meaning in any language and roughly 60% of households don't own a single book, the North West Department of Education hosts exactly one official spelling bee a year, with entry criteria strict enough to lock most kids out before they start. MooiRivier Mall wanted to fill that gap.

We built Word Wizard, an inclusive spelling bee open to every learner regardless of school or background. The campaign identity leans hard into the classroom: a block-grid background that reads like schoolbook paper, hand-cut letterforms with a collage feel, star doodles that mimic margin scribbles, bright joyful colour. The whole system was designed to feel like a child made it, which is exactly the point. The Department of Education publicly praised the initiative for filling a crucial gap in learner development.

The headline numbers: 6,000 learners reached · 38,726 TikTok views · 277% ROI across February–March 2025. But the real outcome was qualitative, learners memorised complex words, performed in front of live audiences, and discovered the kind of focus and confidence that comes from being seen and rewarded for hard work. For MooiRivier Mall this stopped being a marketing campaign somewhere around week two; it's now an annual fixture the community expects.
